Changes to Swimming Pool & Spa Fencing Regulations

As of 1st May 2010 the Victorian Government has introduced a new requirement in pool safety fencing - all new swimming pools and spas with a greater depth of 300mm in Victoria, will require four-sided pool fencing.  This means that the windows and doors of a dwelling can no longer be used as part of a safety barrier.  This is part of the government's continued initiative into preventable deaths by drowning.

If you are contemplating building a swimming pool or spa please refer to the building Commission website www.buildingcommission.com.au for further information about pool safety regulations and requirements.

Existing pool and spa owners do not need to meet these stricter requirements; however, you are still responsible for ensuring that your fencing meets existing requirements, this includes making sure that any self latching gates and doors are in good working order.  If you have concerns regarding your pool/spa fencing, most local councils offer an onsite inspection service.

A recent finding by the NSW coroner into an 11 year old girl's death due to drowning by entrapment has also highlighted the push for a US based performance approach in pool maintenance.  These require that pool and spa suctions be tested for the possibility of entrapment from a person's hair, limbs or jewellery; loose, broken or missing suction fittings or drain covers should be replaced immediately to avoid injury or at worst death.

If you are not sure about the safety of your pool/spa in regards to this, please contact us on the Quick Enquiry form for a safety check of your pool/spa suction fittings.
